WHY CAN'T IT BE RELEASED ON CD OR DIGITAL ?
First of all, years of Illegal copies, and the subsequent decline in support by the cooperating record companies.
It's not a matter of royalties, we have been happy to pay those for years and years. It is a matter of record companies willing to licence. That willingness depends on sales figures, and with the many illegal copies that willingness has declined over the last years.
How it works: With the release of an album, roughly a fifth of the revenue is available for royalties.
With a 100 song track-list, each track receives 1/100 of that 1/5th share of royalty revenue. So it is important that enough revenue is made for companies to stay willing to participate.
Sales have declined since the late 90s, but still the Grandmix sales stayed strong by comparison.
The illegal copies became the problem.
People simply think that that one copy (their own illegal copy), won't make the difference. But with many thinking that way, those people have brought the Grandmix series to an end.
You see, when the cost of drawing up the paperwork is more than that 1/100th of a share in the royalties, the support for a project like The Grandmix slowly vanished.
On top of that came the recent changes and mergers amongst companies, with new policies, who now do not license at all.
The willingness to support, and those policy changes have sealed the fate of the Grandmix year mixes. It's over...
It is very sad indeed,
But I would also like to thank all the true fans that have supported the series over the years. All those that realized that, only by buying the release on CD or digital they would support the series and ensure a new release the following year. And of course all the supporting radio stations like Radio 538, Slam FM, Radio 10, Radio Veronica, as well as Isla106 (Ibiza), Radio Calletti (Italy), Sunshine Live (Germany), Solar Radio (UK) and RadioABC (Denmark)

Although more Grandmix editions have been made like the 80's and 90's editions, this marks the 31st annual Grandmix and is broadcasted on Radio 538.
